A fantastic manga that managed to expand on the original far better than I’d expected it could manage. I’d even go as far as to say characters like Toru and Urie were better than much of the original cast and, as far as villains go, Kichimura was significantly more compelling to me than Eto. It’s very obvious how skilled Ishida Sui has become at writing interesting characters, and it definitely seems that he enjoys this, as it often comes at the detriment to the overall story just how many characters are introduced. I simply don’t have the capacity to remember the around 100 names I have to at once, especially those from the original which I foolishly didn’t think I needed to reread to get the idea of this, which led to a lot of Googling and accidental spoilings. It doesn’t help that although Ishida Sui is good at introducing compelling characters, this manga didn’t have nearly enough time to flesh them all out, so it wasn’t uncommon that I had almost no attachment to characters in pivotal scenes. I definitely think a more streamlined approach to character writing would’ve benefited re. Aside from that, I was slightly let down by the ending. I think it was a huge cop-out to wrap everything up in a bunch of text boxes instead of showing how the process of ghoul-human cohabitation went down. An extra volume would’ve definitely been nice. The art was beautiful though, some of the best you can find in manga and although not the most unique premise (shoutout Beastars) its execution certainly was and if you’re willing to put in a little extra time if you have a bad memory like me it’s a great extension to the original manga. It’s clear this was well thought out and a labour of love for the author (like how re means king in Italian, how cool is that?)
