Ted Lasso (Seasons 1-3)

First off, I’m only including seasons 1-3 here because it felt as though it was its own show and season 4 is more like a reboot without much of the main cast so I’ll make an entry for that once it’s complete. It’d also be pretty unfair to include judgement on something which only has five episodes at the moment (though I’ve really liked it so far). So when I say Ted Lasso and talk about it like it’s a completed show I just mean the first three seasons.

With that aside Ted Lasso is probably the best show I’ve seen in years. It has some of the most entertaining to watch characters I’ve seen in quite some time and it has the bravery to make you despise them and then has enough trust in its own writing to attempt to redeem them. I’ve seen lots of people talk about how great Jamie’s redemption was but he was an asshole from the start, it takes real balls to make a lovable character like Nate, believably turn him into a complete asshole and then give him his own redemption. I don’t think it was perfect, perhaps a little rushed near the end but overall I think they stuck the landing with it. I especially enjoyed that with not explicitly said it was very obvious to the audience, far before it was obvious to Ted what was going on, I think everyone could tell from the glares Nate gave when Ted praised someone else that something was going to happen but I don’t think many expected for them to take such a drastic approach. That said it was a very believable for Nate’s development and I never felt like I had to suspend my disbelief.

I thought the rest of the cast was fantastic too, Rebecca was another standout, in the scene where she was almost crying as Rupert berrated her it was Rebecca’s actor’s performance that sold it far more than Rupert’s (not to say he did a bad job, quite the contrary, I wanted to throttle him in just about every scene). I feel as though I could write multiple paragraphs on just about every character but in the interest of not spending all night on this I won’t, just know they all were incredibly written and acted. That is except for Beard, I have nothing against his actor but his writing just felt so weak and he was such a boring character. They leaned way too hard on him just being a wacky weirdo and it made him super uninteresting to me and his episode was the worst in the series. The scene where he talks about his backstory was pretty good though at least. My only other gripe is that the comedy rarely landed for me, I don’t really mind as I prefer it as a drama in the first place but it was a little disappointing and the scenes where they try to be funny often ruin the atmosphere.
