I wasn’t too sure about this one initially, or even for most of the first half. To be honest I never really cared for Rocket as a character so it was a little hard connecting with the emotional backbone of this film. I loved the parallels between him and Yondu in the second film, however that was primarily because I loved Yondu and I kind of thought after than film Rocket’s arc would be basically over. No no no. Sadly because of this much of his plotline which was the primarily plot-line of this film was therefore lost on me. I cared more about Drax being a good dad than most of what was going on to be honest. Adam was also kind of weird to me, he was just a stupid dickhead for most of the film and then he wasn’t. It wasn’t exactly an unexpected occurrence and it fits with his character that he would flip so easily but even still it felt quite abrupt and I’d have preferred either that he was more fleshed out or just not included at all. Like holy shit for most of the film this fucker felt more like some sort of cosmic threat that just blew through windows every once in a while. The comedy felt as though it took a big step down too, the only chuckles came from Mantis and Drax’s antics which was a little disappointing as I thought everyone had their moments in that regard previously.
All this said, this film also had some great moments, obviously the ending which Guardians seems as though they have down to a science at this point. I didn’t expect this to beat the second’s ending for me and I certainly didn’t expect it to do so in such a low-key fashion but they did and it was beautiful. Quill and Gamora were the real MVPs here, even though I don’t have a single memory of what happened in Endgame so I don’t quite remember what happened there, I liked how Gamora came out of her shell throughout while still not instantly being super close with the Guardians again. I particularly liked her ending where the Ravengers are clearly actually close with her, like she has a new family.
I know I spent most of this bashing the film but most of the complements I gave Guardians previously still hold up, particularly the music choice and colour palette. I know it seems like a low bar but a film just having good music really goes a long way, I don’t know who picks the music here but they might be goated. For the colour palette, I love how this film never feels drab and even when it does it’s more of a stylised way. While this might not be the finale I’d have hoped for I think everything wrapped up quite nicely and this is probably the best film series Marvel has ever made.
