Post rock is all overrated trash
The title of this blog post is a lie, I actually really like some post rock albums, Ants From Up Here, Deathconsciousness and .... that's about it. It feels strange to call a genre of music "pretentious" because like how can a genre be pretentious, but that's the only way I can describe these almost silent twenty minute songs. I'm gonna be talking about Soundtracks for the Blind and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, then compare them to the two I actually liked (Deathconsciousness and Ants From Up Here for the dementia patients out there).
Soundtracks for the Blind is a boring two hour thirty slog recommended only by people who haven't actually listened to it. This entire album felt like the ramblings of some crackhead on the sidewalk and people still suck it off like its the greatest thing they've ever heard. Maybe I'm just too dumb to get it but apart from Helpless Child this is just boring irredeemable dogshit. Now lets compare that to a good album, Ants From Up Here. Now I actually don't have any idea what this album is about and I'm too busy eating ass and sucking toes to find up but what I can tell you is this album is fire. Every single song on this is playlist worthy and I'm sorry but if an album doesn't sound good I cant see how you can give it a high score.
I actually like Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven more than Soundtracks for the Blind by a decent bit, but that's entirely because Storm actually sounds good and I like some of Sleep. I do have a question though, why is every song 20 minutes long? Smashing four songs together into a twenty minute one just seems pointless at best and a pain in the ass if you want to add a specific part to a playlist at worst. This album also suffers from ramblings with little to no instrumental over it. It is not grand, devastating and beautiful Fantano, you've gone senile. If you want something that is actually grand, devastating and beautiful you can look no further than the sponsor of todays video, Deathconsciousness! This album feels like its holding you against the ground with like 300kg weights the entire way through, their 6-10 minute long songs complement that and make feel like a constant stream of crushing sound.
It's kind of like the hit anime Evangelion. Everyone glazes that shit like crazy but then you ask them why they start sweating and visibly shaking, faced with the concept of needing to come up with an original opinion for the first time in their entire life. Nobody actually likes you Evangelion, its a show for babies where they try to shove symbolism even the creators don't understand in my face and try to force me to watch thirty other movies to explain why Shinji freaks the fuck out in a chair for an episode. If I have to read an interview or read the genius page of your album to make it an interesting album its just not good in the first place. An album should be a standalone product complemented by its meaning. I don't want to read the description of a banana to figure out why it should be in a museum. I want to look at the Mona Lisa and then find out Da Vinci wrote in reverse of whatever.
